More and more Americans are going vege, and even among non-vegetarians, interest in meat-free meals is growing. This July, people interested in the plant-based lifestyle will have a new reality show to follow: “Plant-Based by Nafsika,” which will debut on A&E in July.
Growing Interest in Veganism
FoodNavigator recently reported on the growing interest in plant-based foods. Vegans and vegetarians make up 6 and 7 percent of the US population, respectively, but as high as 36 percent of Americans actually prefer alternatives to dairy and meat.
The fact is that even carnivores are becoming more aware of the impacts of high meat consumption. The movement has evolved beyond a niche group. Eric Pearce, director of strategy at New Hope Natural Media and host of The Natural Products Expo West, explained that millennials in particular are seemingly seeking out “food tribes,” groups of like-minded people with interest in particular food cultures. Veganism is one of the leading movements for health- and socially conscious people.
Plant-Based Reality TV
With that increased interest comes new entertainment options. A&E’s new show will follow long-time vegan Nafsika Antypas as she discusses many different aspects of veganism. The show will include interviews with respected health experts, vegan cooking demonstrations, helpful tips, personal stories, and vegan-friendly fashion and entertainment.
Nafsika Antypas isn’t new to the health food scene. She’s the leading olive oil expert at Pilaros Inc., and has spent the past 20 years educating consumers on the health benefits of olive oil, particularly in relation to the Mediterranean diet.
While Mediterranean and plant-based eating styles are sometimes pitted against each other in nutritional discussions, they actually have a lot in common: both rely on vegetables, whole grains, nuts and healthy fats as their primary sources of energy.
Antypas will use her knowledge of Mediterranean nutrition and her experience with vegan living to educate viewers on veganism.
“Viewers will receive a well-rounded perspective of the vegan way of life and see that making a choice to omit animal products from their diet and lifestyle is a positive thing to do, both in terms of personal health and for the sustainability of our planet,” states a recent press release for the show.
